Having more is so much easier, more flexible - because you can use WIN+cursor keys to "snap" apps to quarter of the screen (say), or fill a whole screen with VS and another with Chrome, or the app you are testing. With a single bigger monitor, that's not as simple and quick to do.
And size isn't that important* compared to resolution anyway. I have one monitor (of my three) that I inherited from Herself, and it's a "square" 18 inch Samsung jobbie - but it's low res (1280 * 1024) but fine for emails, which is pretty much all I use it for.
A better survey would be "what's the combined pixel count of all your monitors on the main dev system?"

I totally agree! The question should've been:"How many monitors do you have?" At my office most have 2 but even four monitors can be seen.
But still: I once went to an interview at a rather techy company, where EVERYBODY had single monitors on their desk. I asked them about it and they got super annoyed:
"Of course you can have dual monitors but why [the elephant] do you need it? Can write on two monitors at once?"
"Eh no..."
"Can you READ at two monitors at once?"
"Eh well..."
"So there is not much point in two monitors"
"..."
"If we don't change direction, we'll end up where we're going"

Development tool open again with older version\ similar application to what you are working on

Communications
Other work which cropped up randomly through the day, training\helping other team members, looking at support problems and so on - OK you could close this down.
Doesn't need many monitors, but considerably easier with more than one, otherwise:
Alt-Tab, Alt-Tab, Alt-Tab, confusion...

Well that was a very productive interview question. 30 seconds to confirm the place is a dysfunctional hole that no one with a functioning mind would ever work for by choice.

I work 100% from home, and for the past few years have used a single laptop as my dev environment (and everything else). When working regularly I had a 17" monitor as well as the laptop. I work less these days and find that using just the laptop screen is perfectly adequate. As per the conversation above, I can only look at one monitor at once, and switching windows is just alt-tab, and my hands are always on the keyboard. It's quicker for me to do that key combo than move my eyes/head and refocus on another screen.
As for big screens, I really don't like them that much. You can either blow everything up, run things full-screen and have to move your head reading every line of text; or have things windowed and as above move head/eyes/focus when switching attention from one window to another.
Plus I'm saving power!

I agree.
At work I have twin 22" plus a 17" laptop screen and feel cramped.
At home on my gaming machine I have a single 27" monitor, landscape (1920x1080) and a fast GPU card.
At home on my primary dev machine I have a 24" landscape (1920x1080) plus three 22" portrait (1600x1200) monitors.
At home on my secondary dev machine I have the same as the main one.
I use my home laptop 17" (1920x1080) for email.

Thanks to management who decided hot-desking was the way to go... And never mind my sweet twin 24" setup... Single 27" monitor now...

I'd probably have started looking for a new job when they introduced hot desking - one of the most morale sapping changes management can make, I've yet to meet anyone who really enjoys it.
