The problem may be thermal as well. A cracked trace on a circuit board or a sloppy solder connection can behave like that at different temperatures while looking just fine optically and seem to ok when you measure at room temperature.

Unfortunately not. I guess it's time to take the cover off the hotend and see if I can find anything obvious.
