Now that you mention it: During the Christmas season, one of the treats I gave myself was several kilograms of traditional "Åkerø" apples (orignially a Swedish sort, but it has been very popular in Norway for generations).
It looks "terrible" - almost grayish, no bright color: Åkerö - Wikipedia[^]. But the taste! That is how an apple is supposed to taste! If you store it much past Christmas time, its skin thickens, but the taste remains. To me, it doesn't matter with the thick skin when there is all that taste underneath.

This one is doing my head in.
I'm running Windows on a Mac. Because I love Mac hardware and evidently am a masochist.
If you plug something like a display into a USB-C port on a Mac things go a little pear shaped when Windows goes into sleep mode. Actually, when the display turns off things go weird. And then sleep makes it even weirder. And then your keyboard stops working. And then your fan goes on so hard the laptop starts hovering. So you reboot, or it reboots.
And you have a black background.
Of all the things one would think would be really easy to persist, why is it nigh impossible for Windows to keep my desktop background colour?

Because Microsoft is becoming brain dead is the likely reason. Several years ago I read that they were deprecating screen savers. I run one cause why not? Electric Sheep is beautiful.
But if I change the defaults of the energy saver setup (ie, lengthen the time before my screen or system turns off), Windows will mysteriously STOP THE SCREENSAVER FROM STARTING. Resetting it to defaults will fix the problem, after which I can set it to longer times for awhile, then one of their 'Updates' screws its pooch.

Of all things...the desktop background color?
Somehow I was reminded of an article someone wrote years ago (maybe in the Win8 timeframe?) where the author attempted an experiment testing the in-place upgrade process, starting off with Windows 3.1, customizing the colors (selecting the Hot Dog Stand theme, I believe[*] - of all things...) and trying to upgrade as far as he could just to see where/when his various preferences/customizations would no longer be brought forward.
[*] Seriously, if you're going to google it if you don't remember what it looked like, wear shades. It's horrendous.
I believe his in-place upgrade process went from Windows 3.1, 95, 98, 2000, XP, Vista, 7 and 8.
I forget exactly how it went, but at least some of the colors were still being applied to the Windows 8 tiles.
I'm not sure where I was going with that. Probably just meant to say that in the Windows world, some items are persisted rather consistently, to a ridiculous extent. Others will disappear as soon as you look away from the screen.

I really did my best to stay out of this - especially knowing that both manufacturers have a history of trying to enforce their ownership of your computer(s). Other posts to that effect have been made.
But I can remain silent no longer !
The problem is hidden in plain sight: The device is not designed to retain your "colour" settings but would work properly if you set your "color" settings.

Sounds like you have a much bigger problem than the desktop colour being a bit off then.
Try starting it in a clean boot, that usually fixes quite some odd problems just by doing it.
Have to ask Randor why I suppose, I've never gotten a better answer than that the boot configuration is rewritten at every start, so a clean boot gives it a cleanish sheet so to say.
BTW, have you set "Launch Folder Windows in a separate process"?

You mean reboot my machine each day? That sorta defeats the purpose (I like to be able to just pass out, wake up, get back to where I left off without reloading windows and solutions)

No, a Clean Boot: How to perform a clean boot in Windows[^]
Basically boot windows without most services and other startup programs, just keep the drivers and most important services, such as networking.
Just don't forget to reset to normal start afterwards.

Actually, just restarting it once in Safe Mode, will do almost the same thing.
Using Clean Boot is just an old habit from an earlier life.

Sounds to me like the background colour is a symptom, not a problem. My guess would be that the USB-C hardware is expecting something from the driver during wake-from-sleep that it isn't doing, and the set background color is failing (among other things). If your keyboard is plugged into a USB-C hub this makes even more sense. The fan going full blast could be a consequence of the video not behaving properly, and they're assuming the additional cooling is necessary.
One other thing to remember is that when video handling on Windows fails in some way, they tend to revert to 'safe' settings. For example, your choice of background colour might not be realizable on the mode it failed to.

I just wanted to say a Thank You to all those who participated in a fairly sensitive debate about vaccines. We each have our thoughts and fears, and we each approach this topic from different backgrounds and with different perspectives.
The conversations definitely became a little tense, but what I saw were people actually trying (in many cases) to listen, to calm things down, and most importantly, to carry on the discussion without getting personal or the whole thing just devolving into pointless name calling.
Thank you. I think I just saw a group argument on the 'net that didn't go south.
