I also heard (many years ago) about golfers doing something similar in which they hit onto a neighboring fairway to avoid a dogleg.
However, (as a non-golfer) I do feel that a player should be allowed the opportunity to hit a hole-in-one on every hole. So, if he is honestly trying for a hole-in-one but winds up in the rough, I'm OK with that. But intentionally hitting into the rough should not be allowed. Yet it has nothing to do with spectator safety.
But mainly, they cannot change the rules of the tournament after people have signed up -- they would need to allow people to back-out and refund their entry fees.
I might need to watch "Tin Cup" again.

The safety of personnel/public/anyone has become an over-used pretext for meddling and micro-management. It is exhibited by all organisations with power over others. It's not healthy and it's not beneficial in net terms.

Hi,
The company Laptop was/is playing up so I think today will have to be IT Issues on the timesheet. The issue is Win10 downloaded an update that broke the WiFi adaptor, so logic dictate roll back the install so it works. But you need admin rights, which are held by a third party (?, I don't think the users should have them but at least make them available to the IT staff) so have to phone them on MY phone only to be told by an automated system only Skype calls will responded to(?). Find 5 different numbers three of them give me the Skype treatment, 1 is unobtainable and the last well I am still on hold with. The company outsourced IT support as it would make it more efficent(?), call me synacle but did someone get an inducment (read 'back hander') for it... I wouldn't mind but my performance starts to look bad.

Logic dictates you're just postponing the problem until that update tries to install itself again, or the next update after that. This is not a long-term solution.
It would be a lot more productive IMNSHO to look into updating (or at least reinstalling) the wifi driver instead.

Which is exactly what I said, however it's an operation Can (as in kick down the road) to allow a major / critical project to be worked on. But if the wifi driver is being overwritten by a Windows update, why was it checked and throughly tested before it was rolled out, My lappie is not special, I only have a few bits of software installed that is different from the standard build (strange thing called Notepad++, an XML checker are the oddest)

Sounds to me like you have an internal corporate issue. As a general rule, outsourcing desktop support is a bad move for companies with more than a handful of employees.

Oh the company is World Wide, I'll lay money on the fact if you didn't use one of our products at least today, you probably didn't leave the house. Also we have to have laptops to allow us to mobile (despite the fact the kit we work on is by very definition static it's sub sea, mostly).

Not a real meeting - a staff meeting kind of thing.
Supposedly to reorganize (=> some is covering their ass) and reassign for more efficient use of personnel.
Depending upon how it goes, there's clearly a non-zero chance I'll resign (or be terminated?). The one calling the meeting is an upper-management slug and, well, I've found it necessary to push his buttons lately. To no avail! Doing something concrete is not in his job description.
Anyway, this earlier post is very interesting[^]. Hopefully I'll have no news at all.

Well - that would be feasible. I wrote and maintain far too much of the companies infrastructure for that. My current (real) boss is supposed to have sole and full charge of me (he fleshes out the bones on the infrastructure with data access/display it lets him easily customize).
Considering I am (1) seriously underpaid, (2) financially fully prepared to retire at a moment's notice, and (3) no one else has/is prepared to fill my position, I'm really not going to take anything that annoys me and may insist on my salary being brought up to parity with national standards (per Federal Labor statistics).
But I can't but shuffled away - it would be easier and less painful for them to replace the big shot and even get one that can be useful.

Delayed meeting (imagine that - those things never happen). Well - it's due to start in about an hour (additional delays notwithstanding).
I'm curious, too. Demanding I attend may just be a power play (not just to me). It's even possible some "unofficial" agreements were made clear to him in the background and thus I'll be basically ignored.
It must be the Springlike weather, but I'm really in no mood to take any sort of sh*t. I'd miss a few people, but as far as professional relations go, I have more of them here, on CP.

OK - it's all done with.
Supposedly it's an all-hands potentially on deck get a certain super-senior-management's pet project done. Something that he's wanted done for well over a decade. I gave him a solution, once. They did, however, what they always do and hire contractors to not get it done. A series of them.
The meeting caller was hired a couple of years ago for precisely this project - nothing's worked out so far. From the verbiage used, there will be lots of information gathering about various business units and all (which has all been done before) and nothing will come of it (just as before) but it can be used as excuse for looking like something's happening.
I'm not sure if they'll mess with me/us as it's really rather critical that the stuff keeps working and expanding. The made a PoorPoint presentation but that's hard to see over the telephone.
And a warning that IT may be part of the next round of layoffs . . .

Have a couple of those, the worst one, was I was yelled at on a Friday and told I would have a meeting on Monday, spent all weekend getting notes for my defense, running scenario's in my head, come Monday the guy said 'Morning, nice weekend?' was overly polite for the day. Think Boss of Bosses said to him 'look he does X & company Y will only talk to him, not you' make friends. Spent an entire weekend getting ready for a battle that didn't happen...

Interestingly, I think this one may have gotten a better picture on who's keeping the show running.
A very few of us in this place write code and (at least in my little corner) we really try to do a good job (easier than fixing it later) and have never screwed around extorting them because of their dependence on us.
The second paragraph is probably where we went wrong.
