Jumping on the bandwagon here: I Elephant | [mastadon] ing hate vi. Back in the late 80's I worked on a contract at the local Air Force base updating the HUD for the F-16 simulator. Some bright boy decided it was smart to buy a graphics engine with no supplied software and throw a generic build of UNIX on it. The mess was so farking fragile it couldn't be rebooted. If it lost power or screwed up in some way, it took an entire day following the steps in a very long document to get it started back up.

The only text editor available was vi, which was convinced I was using a teletype. I do remember the "how do you exit this POS?" problem. The rest of the memory is a gray, oozing sore in my brain even almost 40 years later.
