Easily understandable would be preferrable as you directly assimilate it instead of reading about it. Nevertheless, straght roads and very clear code are seldomly possible to create. Speed optimization kills clear code, for example. In these cases, good comments are essential.

The developer should discern about which portions of code should be well commented and explained and which portions are self explanatory.
