Everyone knows that caffine is th giver of life, so lets not argue. Do you think you'd be able to work aswell without it, or even get that much work done. It's 3 in the morning and I've been battling with a load of java code for about 4 hours, and thanks to my trustie coffee I'm still awake and ready to start on me next C++ project. I never acquired a taste for coffee, but I can measure my tea consumption in litres per day. Basically, the bottom of my cup never gets dry.
At least, as a Canadian, drinking tea is considered quite normal. However, every time I head south of the border I have to pack my own supplies and an immersion heater with me, as my unfortunate American neighbours still believe that the best use for tea is to colour Boston Harbour

I always pack some emergency tea supplies whenever I travel abroad but I've managed to find some stores in Canada that supply decent tea. I totally agree that in the States things get a little grim.

You're right, getting good tea around here (California) is a bitch.
When ever I eat out & order "hot tea", all they ever have is an off brand of OrangePekoe  Can you say "dried lawn clippings"?
To top it off, all of my local grocery stores sell those loose leaf tea ball diffusers - but not a one sells loose leaf tea!
I've taken to ordering tea online to get my loose leaf fix.
On the bright side, ever since that little stunt at Boston Harbor, tea has been a tax free food item :

That would explain so much Have you ever dived into someone else's code and found some variable names and comments that make you think that the developer was either totally tripping or was writing this stuff after a 36hr non-stop red-eye session.

I was a pot (of coffee) a day man 'till recently when a foot injury prevented me from getting to the pot. I went from 6-12 cups of drip filter a day to zero.
The pain from my foot was soon joined by a headache whose sinusodial pain/time pattern peaked in a migrane (my first) that *completly* stopped my brain from working for the day. Quite possibily the worst day in my life...
I'm not suggesting you stop - I'm recommending that you DON'T, at least not cold turkey.
Be warned...

I was asked in a recent meeting whether I get a headache when I stop drinking coffee...
My answer was: I don't know ;

I don't know which selection fits my behaviour: I get about 2 l coffee into my left elbow intravenously, but the same time an equal quantity of water into my right one. That's because coffee drains and I want to balance my water household So what's my choice?

I always thought that most developers were caffiene fiends and that I was a little strange for not joining in. Are we all becoming healthy? Is our work that exciting that we don't need artificial stimulants?
Or should I have placed "I prefer a cuppa tea" as one of the options?

While I don't drink coffee on a regular basis, I'm not into that bottled water stuff either. After all we all know what 'Evian' spelled backwards means
Fruit Juices. Now that's the kind of work refreshment that keeps me pumping out the code regularly.

I think te artifical stimulants are still needed. I try coffee every 2-3 yrs, still hate the taste, so I fall back to my safety net, Mountain Dew, that keeps everything flowing.

Well, I drink no coffee, but I don't function without caffiene. It's lots of diet coke for me (like 2L worth on long days).
I wonder how many other non-coffee caffiene addicts will chose 'none' as our beverage choice isn't there..

Maybe I should add tea and coke as options and then my faith in us being caffiene addicts will be restored...

G'day Chris,
Yeah I think the poll should be expanded - but you have to break tea up as well - I drink mainly green tea (and oolong, but I don't think their would be too many oolong tea drinkers out there!)
In my jobs around australia, I saw more tech people who drank strange teas whereas in the US (not that I have been to as many companies), but I mainly see consumption of soft drinks (sodas! whatever!) and coffee by the developers...
Maybe?

Of course, for those of us who (occasionally) get to work at home or off-site in the evening, you could also factor in the contents of the cocktail cabinet - after all, who said caffeine was the only grit on the true path to enlightened UI code...
Guiness does it for me every time. Preferably by the pint (but they still won't put in a dispenser in work. Shame)

Oooh yeah! Late night sessions for me sometimes start with a cup of really strong coffee with a splash of Kahlua. The coffee to keep me awake, the Kahlua to relax...
And Guiness - is there anything it can't do?

Espresso... how many cups of coffee does three triples translate to, and how would you factor in adding coffee to the espresso to warm it up til the next one. Some of us still drink a bit.. heh he

I remember reading somewhere that a single shot of espresso has about 1/2 of the caffiene of a standard 8 oz dunkin donuts coffee.
If that's the case than 3 triples would be what ... 4.5 cups. Child's play. Muahahahahaha. :
