Hi,
I have scanner program that send scanned pictures to printer through firewire.
I want to develop a server in Visual C++ that will recieve the scanned pictures instead of the printer, will schedule them, and send them to the printer.
Both connections of scanner->server and server->printer should be by firewire (The speed is the most important issue for me).
Any one has an idea how to cope with this issue?
Should the server pretend to be a printer, so the scanner will send the pictures to it?
Do I have to dig into the printing protocol in order to enable the server communicate with both scanner and printer?
I don't have a clue how to approch this issue  ,
So any help will be very appreciated.

I am having a problem in writing a program that will generate a billing statement for a customer. How can I declare gas used in this program?
Natural GasTex Company charges their customers based on the amount of gas that they consumed. The company uses the following table to compute charges.
Gas used (in thousands cubic feet)

$1.19 per thousand cubic feet

$0.79 per thousand cubic feet

At first, I was fooled...then I read the other posts went back and read it again. Realizing the second time it was probably homework, I laughed and decided not to offer my solution. And to think I was wondering how anyone could get a client and not be capable of solving such a trivial problem.

We were working on an online ordering system for a client and had a version online for them to test. Google found it, it was quite a kerfuffle. We, as a result, learned how to mark a site so google won't index it.

He wasn't very sneaky. He stole the description directly from the page. Grab the first four words (or the whole line, whatever), and Google will give you exactly one result.

Perhaps we should alter the forums so that they do a google when a message is posted. Clippy can then appear and say "You appear to want somebody to do your homework. You won't get any help with that"

Hi all,
it makes me wonder if there is any difference between transmitting plain text/binary data over a socket.
The main reason I think about it is that binary data can contain the whole range of ASCII characters, including some special characters (eg. 0x00 - NULL character).
And I'm curious, whether any of these characters can cause any confusion when they're being transmitted.
For example, when I'm developing some network application, can I ignore the character of the data which I want to transmit and can I use the same code for sending both types of data (plain text / binary data) ?
Could somebody clarify this to me?

Hi,
there are no limitations on characters transmitted over the sockets. You may transmit any character from 0x00 to 0xFF.
Some limitations (for example, in SMTP) were derived from protocol design. In case of SMTP, it was a possibility to use 7-bit encoding for message body.

Thank you RadioShark, that's very useful for me. Anyway I have couple of questions:
1) In source code of some network applications I've seen that before sending the data over socket, "\r\n" and '\0' was added to the data. Why? It is not neccessary, is it?
2) I have read someting about special characters, that could confuse modem when they are about to be transmitted. In other words, modem would probably consider them to be some special commands or what...Is it true?

When sending characters to a modem, the sequence '+++' causes it to interpret what follows as a command instead of data to be transmitted. But since commands begin with the sequence 'AT' (attention), if what follows is something other than this sequence the modem should revert back to its previous state. I suppose that deliberately sending +++ might cause it to lose those characters, but I've never tested it. Perhaps modem designers have taken this into account, and pass them on if a command doesn't follow them.
