first of all, you're doing a great job with this site. One modest suggestion: What if the user has forgot his password? My email address is somewhere located in your database and I get a "The email you supplied has already been registered." when I try to register again.

When you click on "Modify" or "Delete" you have the choice of hitting a "I forgot my password" button that will mail your password to you.

I don't know if you've been looking into this bug at all, but I just reproduced it. The steps are simple:
1. Click the Reply link on a post.
2. Hit the Back button in the browser.
3. Click the same Reply link.
4. Enter a post normally.
Two copies of the post will be created.

That's far too weird! A message is only created when you click on the submit button at the end of the "Reply" page.

Chris/Uwe, I had an idea for a feature. At the top of the page where it lists the forums, it'd be nice to have the number of unread posts listed there too. That way, after I've read all 20 or so posts in the VC++ forum, I can just look up at the top of the page to see if anything got posted to the other forums in the meantime.
So, instead of this:
ASP/DHTML | Code Requests | General Discussions | (etc...)
it might look like this:
ASP/DHTML | Code Requests(1) | General Discussions(3) | (etc...)

Hello, I have seen this with other messages and my own, it seems in certain conditions, a p is replaced with the smiley figure. One example is when in a message i entered this: “packet” the p got replaced.
I believe the standard for the tongue smiley is a colon, dash, then a ‘p’. :-P.
I have also seen this on other sites that use this same script.

Presently, I manage to do that when I first click on the left mouse button to select the HTREEITEM and then click on the right to bring up a message box showing the value of selected item text.
How to GetItemText from a tree view using right click without using the left one first?

I have two suggestions for this board
One I think it would be better to offer the membership thing, may help keep everything in control, rather then that password of 9 digits <or whatever="" you="" set="" it="" too="">
Just seems unorganized that one day I could be Bill, the next I could be Tony <examples>
Next, the most annoying thing is where the Next, Prev and Last links are to browse the message boardds
Generally, when some one looks at the board, the go from TOP to BOTTOM, so being able to goto the next after one has scrolled to the bottom, seems reasonable to me, instead of having to scroll to the top again
These may have been suggested before, and may have a reason for being the way they are, but These are just my opinions

I've just installed Uwe's new profile scripts that will help with the password situation - in fact by creating a user profile on CodeProject you'll have access to a whole bunch of neat customisations for the message boards and other sections of the site.
With regards to the Prev/Next links, you are right. As soon as I'm back from PDC 2000 I'll look into fixing this. I'm offline at the moment so if I forget to do this just send me an email reminding me.

Hello!
I find it fairly frustrating how much load time is involved with following a thread, and in fact, just viewing a page of posts. What happened to the flat view which I saw here a couple weeks ago where you would see all the text of all the messages on the screen.
I like flat view, as you can do all the d-loading in one go - especially good if you are planning on reading every message, But I can see how that could be annoying for some if they only wanted to read some.
I think being able to expand one thread to flat mode would be great! You could load up a page in preview, see which thread interests you, and then expand all the messages in that thread in one go...

Flat view had some problems so it's been replaced with the preview mode. Uwe and I are working on a way to display single threads in a more user friendly way.

I don't know what flat view looked like, but I would like to see something like the preview mode only with 10 lines or so per message.
You should also consider downloading all the messages at once and only show them when clicked on.
Anyway, you need to do something to reduce the load on your server, I get the "HTTP Server busy" error much too often.

It would be great if you could add an image to the forum so that it is clearer what you are talking about.
I guess this would require an upload feature and some html in the text body as has been done with the smily faces

Unfortunately images will really kill bandwidth. It's easier just to offer to mail people pics and code if they need it.

Hi Chris,
what do you think of putting all contents of the CodeGuru on a CD-ROM which regular update cycles, e.g. 3 month ?
I know there is a lot of stuff behind the scenes you might want to hide from the public, but it would be a realy great thing to have a CD, setting one or two DSNs, maybay registering some DLLs and then be able with one's own PWS/IIS surfing "offline" the CodeProject.
Is this something you can think about ?
