MIDI is cool while programming.
Old music of the games Doom 2 and The Secret of Monkey Island 2 makes me happy, and then I think well.
Build the path. The past is just a reference.

Beck's music somehow makes me more creative.

I listen to almost anything while I'm programming.
Except some of the rock, since these are way too much to handle for my brain. They could cause a short-circuit :P
Things I do listen are:
- Live
- U2
- Dido
- Nelly furtado
- (Sometimes) Norah Jones.

Well . . .
I find the common distraction of a background noice, rather annoying-when I'm close to solving a solution to the problem at hand. Yet some days, I enjoy a rap, a melody to fire other nerons in my 5lbs of grey matter-to get me rolling & thinking on different threads/possiblities to for a solution.
Sometimes distractions help!
I think its a mood.

I listen to everything...
Somedays i'm pounding NOFX, MXPX or Pennywise and the next i'm listening to Metallica, Pantera, etc...
Sometimes I get my fix for the day by listeing to classic rock or GTO's like The Animals(House of the rising sun) or more pychodelic tuneage like Space cowboy (The joker) by the steve miller band.
Sometimes I even need to listen to top 40's music...
Music is like a drug for me...I need my daily fix...actually I probably only go 6-8 hours a day without...when i'm sleeping
Music truely (spelling) is a universal language...even when I can't understand what's being said...if the song rocks...it's "goot yah!"
ie: Goldfinger does a cover of 99 luftballons (red balloons) by Nina or Nena...and half the song is spit out in German...but the song still rox ya!!!
btw-I listen to my music screaming loud...if I was in the movie "dances with wolves"...my name would have been "bleeding ears"...
Cheers

I tend to just have the TV on all the time, it brings in the world and aliviate any sense of isolation. Interesting poll distrution, equally spread.
I am sitting in my flame proof buncker, so don't even bother.

I only listen to rap; I just listen to different types and have different playlists set up depending on what mood I'm in

Hmmm, I wonder if there's any correlation between those two sentences.

Rap reminds me a bit of Led Zep. Sounds great when you are young, but as you get older you realize there really isn't much there.

really depends on who you are listening to. Stay away from the cRap you hear on the radio and listen to artist that don't make it to the radio too often and you got it made. My personal favorite hiphop albums to listen to while coding are:
Talib Kweli - Reflection eternal
Roots - things fall apart
Roots - tipping point
Common - Electric Circus
Common - Like water for chocolate
Blackstar - Blackstar
Mos Def - Black on Both sides
I also like to listen to Jazz/techno ambiant (sometimes its hard to tell whether its jazz or techno -ish)

while I value everyone's opinions, I value some less than others. I thought this was a poll. Had I known it was a debate I wouldn't have bothered to put my 3 cents in. (Yeah, THREE cents)

I cannot programming without listening Tristania, Diary of Dreams, Lacrimosa, Eternal Tears of Sorrow.
Just the Best.

Yeah! Lacrimosa is a really great band. And I'm actually listening to the "Echos" album. Very inspiring...

Not much into rock but RAMMSTEIN yes. The thing is it is in german so the words dont affect thinking. This is especialy important when doing loops.
