I have top menu in master page.
When I click an item in sub-menu the full page is refreshed.

How do I prevent this?

Well, you have not explained lots of things. Based on what you are trying to do, you need to place the menu in a update panel and make the change in the panel to avoid full page postback.

If the menu is for page navigation then generally they are full postback based on the page change. In case you have a fixed page and partial updates are required then make use of Update panel and script manager.

Well, this is not an issue. Instead a design thing.
