Operate aficio mp 171 spf scanner with your own C# application

If you use the TWAIN dll in your C# code to scan images from an Aficio MP 171 spf scanner/copier, do you need to configure a network connection? I would like to connect the scanner directly to my pc. But when I do so, the device is closed and I cannot aquire images.
