This is a difficult thing to answer in the small space available in a forum like this, so your best bet is to search the internet for articles/blogs/tutorials and read as many of them as you can until it clicks.

Here[^] is one of the clearer ones I have found.

If you are interested in looking at others, I used simple database normalization example as my search phrase.
