I have installed sql server 2008 r2 on a remote server having windows web server 2008.
The problem is whenever I start management studio and log in the screen shows "instance specific or network related error". I have noticed that the mssql service is not running. I try to start the service but that can't be done also.
Kindly help me with this issue

First, check both WIndows Event Log on the server and see what error is happening when you start the Sql Server.

Also have a look at the Sql Server ErrorLog (typically located in the instance home directory under MSSQL\LOG). The errorlog file should contain more detailed information about the problem.

I got help from a peer of mine and found out that VIA protocol was enabled which was the cause of this problem. You can view this by opening the sql server configuration manager->sql server network configuration-> Protocols for MSSQL server
