A virtual machine is essentually no different than a physical machine. Software can't tell it is being run on one or the other and will connect to the network or internet the same way as if it was run on a real PC. If you want to protect your virtual machine from attacks like for instance intrusion, then the answer is yes, do install a firewall on your VM.

If i select to share the ip address with the physical machine, will the firewall in my physical machine service for virtual machine?

I cannot speak for all solutions, but Oracle xVM VirtualBox will not. It uses a network adapter driver to directly interact with the network connections on your computer.
