UNICODE data reading from MYSQL by C++

i have same problem when i am reading unicode (日本語)data from mysql DB and writing it in to say MSAccess(capable to writ unicode) it is comming ???
then i changed connection string and set characterset=utf8 then value is coming as 'æ—¥æœ¬èªž'
but what i should change in my code so that i will get correct value i.e. 日本語.
any idea after reading the value i am storing it in _variant_t in c++ code
any one has any solution..??
