disk errors during a paging operation

In my PC, I got the errors as "disk errors during a paging operation" in system event log.
Does anyone know how to fix this problem in Windows XP. I can still use the hard disk in my PC for sure.

Bad sign! At least perform full disk diagnostics, as soon as possible. Start with simple CHKSDK:

Did you try clicking on the hyperlink in the event properties dialog. Basically the info from MS it says that if the error occurs frequently on the system drive then it should be replaced.

I occasionally see the error on an external HD and I assume, although I don't know for sure, that it occurs when the disk has dropped into standby and system makes a read/write request which cannot be serviced until normal operating mode has been resumed.
