Dear All,

What is the cost of VS 2005 developer version and how/where can i buy it?

I am using sql server 2005 express edition as backend, if i am giving it to my customers, then what are the formalities to follow (Licence and legal.. etc..)?

Thanks,

Bhakti

SQL Server Express is free to use and distribute. Pricing for Visual Studio can be found http://www.microsoft.com/visualstudio/en-us/buy[^], which BTW, was very easy to find by a very simple search in your favorite search engine.

The question though is why do you want to use and distribute outdated software. You should at least be using SQL Express 2008, or 2012 which has recently been released, and Visual Studio 2010, which has a free Express version also.

Thanks Mark,

Actually i wanted to know where can i buy it in India, its true that its easy search but i wanted to know from someone who have already purchased it.

For your question on outdated software, well, i have developed a window application using VS2005.

Another question for you,

If i develop any application using VS2005 Express, do i need to get any kind of approval from Microsoft before distributing the developed application?

Actually, why didn't you say you wanted pricing in India from someone who already purchased it. Don't waste our time, give the relevant information up front.

Yes, every application developed using Visual Studio must be approved by Microsoft. [rolleyes] Seriously? You really have to ask this?

Well Mark :)... first of all.. Please cool down. and i have an advise for you, Please dont invest your valuable time on any question for which you think that your time will be wasted..

And dont expect that everyone will ask the question in the format which you like.. just be cool.. if something is funny/silly then just ignore it.dont discourage others :)

There is nothing to cool down about. It is not about the format of the question. You did not provide all of the information and only after time was spent to give an answer to the question as provided did you change the requirements.

I have advice for you. If you provide all of the relevant information up front you will get better answers.

I agree, going forward i will be providing all the relevant info.

Thanks Mark :)
The MS Visual Studio can be procured through dealers in India. Please see this link

It is better to go for latest version of Visual Studio. Professional version is good and suitable for most applications. From Visual Studio 2008 onwards, multi targetting was introduced. So the application developed in Visual Studio 2005, which is based on .NET 2 can be directly run in the Visual Studio 2008 and upwards. Hence, there is no issue with the application already developed in 2005.

I think with Visual Studio express edition, the compiled version of developed application can not be distributed.
The list of limitations of Visual Studio Expression Editions is given here and there is the following note
NOTE: it is often said that the Express EULA does not permit commercial development - that is not true

The comparison of different versions of Visual Studio is given here

The details about express editions is given here

You are correct. Earlier I used VB2005 express edition. Some how I was under wrong impression. May be setup project was not possible I think.
Thank you for correcting.
