How do I ensure that only logged on users can read other pages of my website?

I am building my first website in fact I have all the webpages built. My only concern is: supposed a person is not logged in and types the url of a page that is meant for only logged on users ,how do I ensure that the homepage and a log on instruction is served the person rather than the requested webpage.
