how to create thumbnail image from rtsp or http streaming link

hi i am developing mobile WAP application. here i have some rtsp link that are supposed to be played by user upon clinking on it. But before that i need to show the thumbnail for these rtsp link. as this links are for live channels , so i need to have dynamic thumbail for currently running program on the crossponding channel.
please help me out how i can do this. i have tried ffmpeg but this can extract image from locally saved video.
