I need some guidence for my new project.

I wish to develop a software, using which i can control electronic devices.
Simply wish turn on and off a light.

I know its not easy task to do. But i am ready to learn and study about new things.

The first thing , i want to know which device or intermediate thing i should use to connect to external device(eg. Bulb).
From where should i start.. Pleas help me..
