Fav Ico Not Working on Chrome and IE

Hi

i m using favicon for my website.. i used the following Tag

HTML

<link rel="icon" href="favicon.png" type="image/png" />
<link rel="shortcut icon" href="favicon.ico" />

but internet explorer & chrome not supporting it

Can any one help me how can i do this...

I recall reading that ICO was the preferable format.
I use a combination of your two tags - it renders fine in everything I use.
<link rel="icon" href="img/myFavicon.ico" type="image/ico">
