GridView in UpdatePanel in Panel with ModalPopup - sorting and paging cause ModalPopup to close

I m new to ajax.problem comes when I try to sort or page the gridview in the updatepanel. The sorting and paging occurs correctly but the action forces a postback thereby closing the modalpopup window. Any ideas for a workaround would be greatly appreciated.

Well, we'd have to see the code to help but one suggestion I can give without any code is stop using the UpdatePanel. Use javascript to make the calls to webmethods, the .net updatepanel is horrible!
