I am a small business north of Boston. My late husband originally wrote our very specific software in Business Basic - starting in the Data General Mini Computer age. One of his programmers has been supporting us over the years, but is now faced with serious medical issues and will not be able to continue. Looking for someone to provide periodic support. I have all the data files, except for an late revisions, but I can get them.
Does anyone know someone that might be interested in offering on-going support of our software. I know we use transoft for something as well in which we have an end user license.
You can contact me at
Leslie McGonagle

Thank you

What I have tried:

No clue - I am not a programmer

Best not to put contact info in posts.
P.S. I'm originally from Reading.

My condolences on your loss - I lost my wife last year, and I know how traumatic it can be trying to tidy up a life partner's affairs.

But this isn't the right place to ask for this help: we aren't a recruitment or "code it for you" site. You need to look a lot more locally, and a lot more specifically (particularly if the old DG equipment is still in use, I haven't touched one of those since the mid 80's!).

I'd suggest that your best bet is to try somewhere like Hire Freelancers & Find Freelance Jobs Online | Freelancer[^] and ask there.
But be specific (or as specific as you can) and remember: if you pay peanuts, you get monkeys. And there are a lot of monkeys out there! :D

It may be a better idea to bite the bullet and get a new system created for modern hardware and software using the existing one as a "specification" rather than trying to get the existing software supported: after all the years it's been running it's probably going to be pretty difficult to understand the code - which makes it difficult to support. A new system also gives you access to a lot more developers for future work / support.

Leslie, if I were in your position, I would look to your local chambers of commerce to see if there was anybody local who could come and perform an audit of your software. Make it clear that you are only interested in the audit and would not be seeking them to write the software for you. The reason I say this is because you say you have a license for Transoft, but you don't appear to be clear what that's actually for - from what I can tell, Transoft is a specialist in transportation software.

Basically, what you are looking for is for someone to review what you currently have, and to come to you with a series of recommendations. In some cases, you may have software costs that you no longer need; in which case, you can get rid of those costs. You may also have systems that need to be rewritten; again, the audit should help you prioritise what must be done as new system, and what can wait. I know this is going to seem odd but I will also add that you should be considering whether you can do away with some of the software functionality altogether; is there a manual approach that will do just as well for you. Also, this can evaluate whether some of the bespoke software you have, has a commercial equivalent that will be cheaper than maintaining a legacy system (the audit should also consider legacy migration issues if you need it).
