Or don't use a keyboard-wedge type scanner. Use an Ethernet or USB based version that comes with it's own SDK.

You can't tell, unless you have the scanner configured to provide unique lead in and lead out character(s).

To do that depends on the manufacturer, so consult your manual, or talk to the manufacturer of your scanner.
