What sort of response are you expecting ? What do you mean by 'system level programming' ? What sort of programming do you already know how to do ? How is this a 'quick question' ?

Well, assuming you know C ( as opposed to c++ ), that seems like a good place to start. So, buy a book. Read it. See where it goes.
