Find the Server name for a database to store it in a web config file

i want a function that find the data source of a database (the server name) and then store it in a webconfig file or in the database itself
also i want to ask is it efficient to use this way for a server client application which is to store the database at a server and install the application for the client and gives him the data connection string through the webconfig file
any responses please?
