1.) Don't take that too serious. Most probably your interviewer also did not know the difference exatly....there exists not a unique answer ;)
2.) Try to use Google to get an overview

Then you need to improve your google skills. There mist be thousands and thousands of examples for you to look at.

that is not the answer to my question

I was very tempted to use a "let me google that for you" link, however ...

http://www.c-sharpcorner.com/uploadfile/gowth/two-tier-and-three-tier-architecture-with-example/[^]
and
http://www.virtu-software.com/ask-doug/QandA.asp?q=48[^]

You can't give any specific examples of names of applications because in theory you don't know how they are implemented!!

Here is another more comprehensive example http://www.softwaretestingclass.com/what-is-difference-between-two-tier-and-three-tier-architecture/[^]

I've noticed your comment about google searches ... to find these links I first searched with
Quote:
example of 2-tier and 3-tier architecture
then again with
Quote:
interview questions example of 2-tier and 3-tier architecture

I've also found some "how to google effectively" tips at http://mashable.com/2011/11/24/google-search-infographic/[^]
