232-Communication with PC Com port

I wish to communicate with serial port of my pc using Visual Studio 2010.I'm new to Visual C++.I tried it using createfile...It's compilition gives no error..Bt when the program executes it gives exeption and port doesn't get identified..
In Terbo c also i tried it using dos.h and bois.h .it compiles successfully but doesn't send or receive data..How can i do it successfully??

What's the use of such questions if you don't show any detail? Okay, you screwed up something, but how anyone could find out where?
