error in the web.config file for a deployed asp.net website

hi, i have deployed a website just for testing.But gives error in the web.config file.
The error is like

"It is an error to use a section registered as allowDefinition='MachineToApplication' beyond application level. This error can be caused by a virtual directory not being configured as an application in IIS."

And it shows error in..

<authentication mode="Forms">

what should i do now.This is the first time i have deployed the website.Thanks in advance

I renamed my web.config file but now error is
The file '/symon/Site.Master' does not exist.
Though it exists.

the error says itself "virtual directory not being configured as an application in IIS"
Check out if you have multiple web.config file..If you have delete the duplicate and place original one under root folder of your app.
