Not a flaw, a feature. I went to check it out and it let me sign up for an account without supplying a valid username. Later when I posted a message with that account the screen you compse the message in told me I should fill in a username, but didn't have to. I agree, this is a stupid feature.

Are you talking about all the top level posts that show up without a name? It's a bug in CP's code. The users actually do have a name, it's just not showing up in top level posts.

Hello everyone,
I was wondering if it would be nice to have a *notify me by mail when answered* like button for forum posts, so that I for example could get notified when somebody would answer a message that was posted by John Doe  It would be useful, because sometimes I am also interested in the answers to different questions posted by different people and would be nice to get notified by mail other than start looking whether this or that post was replied by someone.

OK, lemme say up front, that I am sorry if this post smells like a rant. Its
not intended to be. But I couldnt immediatly spot any answers to my questions
in any faqs, and couldnt find happiness through any digging downward from the
top page...
Anyway, my question is this...
Does CodeProject emphasize or standardize to any particular version of ZIP ?
Im running MSXPSP2.something with the standard (I think) integrated WinZIP pkg.
(I cant guarantee this. Im a lowly programmer, and havent slayed any cavetrolls on the job yet, so Im totally at the mercy of my corporate computer IT/firewall group.)
My problem is that I cannot open roughly 50% of the project ZIP files that I
download from this site.
When I doubleclick on an new 'incompatible' one, I get a message that says "Cannot open specified archive. blahblahblah" -and- "... Try downloading again ..." etc.
I *CANNOT* confirm that there isnt some problem here on my end, but I wouldnt
know how to tell. All I can say in this regard, is that half of my example
downloads *DO* work fine.
So, Im wondering, what can be the problem? What does TheCodeProject have to
say/suggest about this (i.e., what can I download thats GUARANTEED to work?).
And, if so, where is this specified?

FYI - Im using Netscape 7.2, and the NS download manager creates the same
file over and over again, so its (seemingly) NOT getting corrupted.

CP doesn't standardize on any version of .ZIP that I know of. Anyone is free to use their favorite ZIP utility to post whatever they need to in their article
There's a couple of thing that can be wrong. BTW: I don't have problems opening any of the files you referenced, so the server-side .ZIP's aren't corrupted.
The firewall your company is using can introduce small errors if it is having problems keeping a connection going or if it needs packet's retransmitted.
Local network problems can also cause this.
And NS's download manager might also introduce problems when it tries to reassemble the pieces of the files. Skip using the Download Manager and see what happens.
The ZIP utility that you're using to unzip these things might not be 100% compliant.

I had no problem with those files, they both open just fine using the built in zipper in XP SP2. I downloaded them using FireFox 1.5

Well because people use out dated browsers It means that us developers have to go back to each and every one and make sure it all works. This means that we constantly have to give up functionality for compatibility.

If you developers targeted only the newest browsers it would force everyone to update their browsers if they want to use your site. That becomes your problem, not mine. Every site I visit (CP, MSDN) works just fine with my current browser so I am not going to waste the time needed to download the latest and greatest on my speedy dialup connection.

Because you don't want hundreds of angry web developers outside your house with torches. And also if people would take it upon themselves to upgrade we could start providing you with much better content. Win-Win

No, just a hobby C++/MFC programmer. I know just enough HTML to make my CP articles look presentable.

Ok well then you know the basics. I guess you probably have done a tiny bit of javascript or CSS before. For a long time your standard HTML thrived and was an esy standard for browsers. Since then the web has evolved dramatically due to increased resource and interest. CSS and XHTML is what we have to deal with. No two browsers deal with them the same way. I am not even going to go into the many JavaScript flaws.
The fact is that your "FireFox 1.5" contains a plethora of errors that completely compromise our designs. We unfortunately have to support it because we cannot personally tell our users what browsers to use anymore so we have to cover all bases. The problem is not solved in later browsers but it has been greatly improved. Imagine if you had to write an application that had to run in 98, XP, Vista, OSX, Every Linux distro, Solaris and every Unix distro, and you only had a limited set of functions that mean something completely different in every platform and you had no way to properly identify what to install. Also you don't now if your user even has support for the lmited set of functions and you somehow need to notify him only using those same functions.
Can you see the problem we face?

I had a similiar problem last night. I was not able to view CP at all. I kept getting a prompt message box asking for my user name and password and no matter what I entered I was not accepted. After hitting the cancel button a bunch of times I would end up with a not authorized message, and that was simply trying to view the main page.
Seems to be working correctly now though.
