Initially when I read the article, I thought the strip club was using software that used an Oracle database and somehow due to a database corruption/bug, a patron managed to run up a massive unpaid tab.

Yes, but when the employee doesn't pay they go after the company. And, according to the cardholder agreement, the company is on the hook in such instances. They need to offer termination to the people that ran up such bills.
