I wore New Balance 1123's until a couple years ago when they stopped making them, and I had problems with the replacement model. I'm a big guy (6'1", 210 lbs) for a distance runner and I severely overpronate. I wear custom orthotics and the best motion-control shoes I can find. The 'Beast' gives me a nice combination of support and fit for the orthotics, which have a pretty deep heel cup.
The good news is my running club membership gets me 10% off at my running shoe store.

I had a hiking/backpacking buddy that wore these on occasion and liked them very much.

They'd probably be good for that... because of all the support. Although not very waterproof so it would have to be fair weather hiking.

No hiking boot that I've ever seen or used is waterproof, even in the military boots were designed to breath. The only complaint he had was mud stuck between toes.

This is not a problem because the shoe is not advertised as water resistant but you should be aware that even walking through wet grass will get your socks wet. I can afford the shoes. I can afford the carbon fibre bottle cages. I can afford the aerodynamic helmet and ergonomic riding clothes.
However, if I bought all of that I wouldn't be able to afford an actual bike.

Maybe it's just me, but these shoes looked like having a hair on their's soles*. Of course this impression went away after I'd switched to a view from the bottom**.
