Cycled down to the town centre this afternoon to get a haircut and go to the bank. I carefully locked the bike to one of the racks at the station, along with another 30-40 already there. I was gone for only about 30 minutes but when I returned some scunner had made off with it. I doubt that I'll see it again, so I can only curse in silence and hope the little weasel falls off it.

Scrotes indeed: have you told the law? Bear in mind that there is a good chance of CCTV coverage at railway stations, so the scumbag could be caught.
Check your insurance? Some policies do cover bikes as part of the home contents (though it's unlikely they will pay out if it's at a railway station).

Yep, told the police, and it is on my home insurance, but will cost me my excess and NCD. It's not the value so much as the annoyance of it happening when I am always careful to lock it. And unfortunately all the CCTV is on the town side of the station, where I will always park in future.

Don't lose hope. Where I live, all second-hand dealers must report everything they buy each day to the police department (I worked on the software). Sellers are required to provide valid ID.
Serial numbers are tracked against stolen good reports. Often, the clueless thieves don't know this until the police show up at their door with a warrant. I had a bike nicked out of my garage. The pawn shop gave it back to me and the perp got 18 months (he had committed other thefts).

I don't think bike dealers in the UK are that sophisticated: yet. But if it does change hands for money it's unlikely to go through a dealer. Just have to chalk it up to experience.

Mate of mine had five grand of bikes nicked out of his garage last week, they cut through high security wire to get them, his bike, another he was building, his two sons', and his wife's.
Probably spotted riding it and followed, no chance of selling them locally.

Sadly, there are no bike locks that aren't easily defeated. Cables and chains can be cut. U-locks can be broken with a little LIQUID NITROGEN and the tap of a hammer.
The only solution is to have a cheap "beater" bike you use when commuting and you have to leave it somewhere, and keep your nice bicycle for pleasure rides.
