I was just thinking 10 minutes ago I may have misread your statement on disk-compression, then 5 mins ago I got notification of a reply. Oh well, we can't lose 'em all.
Indeed, I concede my reading comprehension skills are not what they will be after some sleep and concur, MS haven't hit any of the marks I consider important.
With such a decline in the aesthetic qualities of windows and a similar direction of 'progress' in so many other areas, I'm thinking more and more that Wine or VirtualBox/VMWare under a flavour of Linux will be how my next machine is setup. For years I only kept a primary install of Windows for Office, Win 32/64 coding and gaming, though even these can be done without a full-calorie windows these days.

I don't compress my disks at all, but I agree with your point.
Microsoft seem lost at the moment (have done since Windows 8/Surface/Windows Phone). I still get annoyed that the environment variables window *STILL* isn't resizable after all these years!

How to make a Start Menu for Win 8 without installing too much cr@p:
0. Get this[^].
1. Create a new folder on your desktop.
2. Drop shortcuts to whichever %allusers%/start menu/ and %you%/start menu/ directories you like in the new directory.
3. Click and hold the left mouse button on the new folder.
4. Look[^] what you get!

I've had KO Approach for a few years. It's a very handy tool, with standard features that just lent it to "replacing" the Start Menu.

On some critical and crazy expensive servers, no we don't have 3+TB. Server quality drives are expensive. We're switching to SSD storage, but that too is expensive. We actually run pretty tight with storage, using only what we need.
For my personal use I have 1Tb on my home machine, 128Gb on my work laptop (It's dual boot MacOs/Win7, so 128 each). The ability to save space on the drive makes my life better.
And relax: Windows 10 will Make It All Better. All of it. You'll wonder how you ever survived without it. Your computer will run better, your screen will appear brighter, the air will even smell fresher. Small bunnies will hop among the flowers and green grass sprouting around you as you install it. While using Windows 10 you will never, ever get rained on.

If they really wanted to solve the problem how about stop downloading ever DLL / EXE ever published though windows updates and only retain the ones used by the actual OS? It's pretty bad that the cache directories are larger in size than rest of what's on disk.
Common sense is admitting there is cause and effect and that you can exert some control over what you understand.

It is about Windows 10, which will be pre-installed on PCs and laptops.
This is the text from the article:
"With current builds, Windows can efficiently compress system files. That gives back approximately 1.5GB of storage for 32-bit and 2.6GB of storage for 64-bit Windows. Phones will also be able to use this same efficient compression algorithm and likewise have capacity savings with Windows 10.
"We are also redesigning Windows’ Refresh and Reset functionalities to no longer use a separate recovery image (often preinstalled by manufacturers today) in order to bring Windows devices back to a pristine state. This reduces Windows’ storage footprint further as the recovery image on typical devices can range in size from 4GB to 12GB, depending on the make and model. Phones already have a storage-optimized recovery solution, so, unlike compression, this enhancement is only for tablets, laptops, and desktops."
It's all about the PC, with a couple of asides about phones -- in fact, the "refresh and reset", as they've chosen to rename it, has nothing to do with phones at all.

Of course, it's about windows 10, but the reason to do it isn't for desktops and servers, it's for mobile devices and IoT.

I still don't understand why a serious Windows user needs a Start Menu. I hardly recall what it even looks like, and I'm still on Win 7, i.e. I have one somewhere. If it doesn't come up when I type a few letters into the search box, I open it using explorer.
Granted, I might have saved some time using said menu instead of having to google for where the SSMS exe is located, but that truly is how long forgotten my start menu is.

Because shortcuts to everything you install are put there, along with the most convenient links to some system stuff, so (even if it's only as a last resort) you can find all those apps that people have given stoopid, non-descriptive names for.
Some people prefer the "smarter" start menu, which does preferences and all that malarkey, but the KISS basic start menu is generally more useful, because there's less "mystique" to scare users off; it's just a bunch of nested lists of stuff you can access.
The main complaint, however, is what they replaced it with. "Revert to what worked ten times better" is the request of the day.
