Yep -that shows all child windows in the task bar, but doesn't let you actually treat child windows as separate windows.

Excel 2013 does remove the all spreadsheets in a single MDI container misfeature of the last 20 years of excel so you can view them side by side without needing to run multiple excel processes.
But it does something even worse instead. To be helpful it actively merges multiple Excel processes together. Officially this is supposed to be a good idea because copy/paste between two SSes in different processes doesn't quite work the same as copy/paste between to SSes in the same process, also "to make it work more like MS Word" (WTE that actually means). This is a problem because Excel still only has a single undo buffer shared among all documents and my second most common reason for multiple Excel processes is to get around that. Typical workflow:
0) Start making major changes to a table of data, and realize I need the before and after versions side by side.
1) Copy the updated table into a spreadsheet in a new process.
2) Go to the original file and Undo. Undo. Undo. Undo...
3) Copy the new table back to the original file.
2013 breaks this because it immediately merges processes and my first undo removes the copy in the temp file. I initially tried working around it by saving the temp file, only to discover that my undo buffer was completely emptied. 
Fortunately a bit of Googling turned up the solution. Replace the "magic" shortcut created by the office installer with a normal one and add the /x command line parameter. Now all of my Excel processes stay non-merged just like they're supposed to.

Sadly not, unless you want to run one "Desktop" version and one "Modern" (i.e. Metro) version, from my reading. I believe MS sometimes use "Modern App" to describe a Store App/Universal App, whatever the **** you want to call that pile of steaming...
As I keep reiterating, if this is their idea of the future of Windows development, it may well be time to start reskilling on a different platform. I love the idea of Universal Apps, where most code can be shared between desktop/tablet/phone/HoloLens, but I don't like the restrictions that come with the only way of distributing an app to users (apart from in source form), except within an Enterprise.
That's (barely) acceptable for a phone or tablet, for a desktop O/S its just not acceptable.
If it was possible to set up a number of trusted stores/repositories, I'd have no issues at all.
(It's not even like its worked very well at keeping their own store free of cruft)

Although the Pro and Enterprise editions will both be able to defer updates, Windows 10 Home users will not have the option. Updates will instead be downloaded and installed automatically as soon as they're available.
I will absolutely refuse to install W10 if that's the case. I don't want it downloading crap, I don't want it updating crap. I await for someone to write a patch this kills this process, otherwise, it's a big F.U. to Microsoft.

Yeah, I wonder what "defer updates" means. Does it still suck up my bandwidth downloading? Can I defer indefinitely or do I get constant reminders and a time limit?
Blech. As a developer, I want a stable development environment, I do not Windows updating itself!

OK, I'll bite.
Why don't you want updates to the downloaded? I'm assuming it's not the download, it's the "download and restart at a time and place other than my choosing".
Would you actually install Win10 Home version instead of Pro?

It's more the horror stories that I've read occasionally here in the lounge about some updating essentially bricking the computer. I probably got burned by it years ago but don't remember. A more recent memory is when I was updating some RoR features tests  when all of a sudden, every single test started failing. Worked fine for on another dev's box, not on mine. Then it stopped working on her box too!
It took literally a week to realize that Firefox had updated and the old Selenium drivers were incompatible. After installing the Selenium updates, it took another week to fix the tests that were now broken with the new Selenium.
Two weeks, literally down the tubes. OK, sure, I got paid by the hour, but there are some lost hours that money can't compensate for.
So, I detest auto updates, even for security patches.

It's more a question of whether I'll even install W10 - I'm still happily on W7. I suppose eventually I will have to, and yeah, that'll mean Pro I suppose, but at this point, I don't know even know what the difference between the version are, I'll look that up one day, but not until I need to.
I figure, I'll download W10 from MSDN when it goes live and put it in some dusty corner where, if I leave the SSD baking in the sun for too long, it'll rot away to nothingness anyways.
Hey, by then, it'll be time for W11!

It's actually been a long, long time since a Windows update has screwed me.
It's been a far, far shorter time that an Apple update has screwed me though 
If you get Pro then, really, it's a moot point. There will be apps that will allow you to tweak the UI and remove the tiles. We'll be able to make it usable, eventually.
I swore blind I would never touch Win8, but after Apple dropped support for Win7 for bootcamp I'm now on Win8.1. I added Stardock and it's actually usable. Sure, the way you have to go through 10 different sidebars, charms, Metro wizards and then, eventually, the same old Windows dialogs just to set some things that used to be available from a single right click is retarded, but they'll fix that, right? Right??
