How is "road tax" calculated / collected in the UK?

but prior to 2001 it was based on your engine size.
Now somehow the government went all electronic and you can pay either in full, every six months or monthly via your bank account.

So it's an annual tax based on vehicle ownership not "miles driven" or "fuel usage"...
When you called it a "road tax" versus a "vehicle tax" I wondered if it was a progressive tax based on miles driven.

Top Gear did a feature where they tried to buy a car, drive it from London to Edinburgh then sell it there to see if that was cheaper than taking the train

Years ago a mate of mine working in Derby had to have a meeting with someone in Edinburgh. He worked out it was cheaper to fly them both to Barcelona and hire a room for the meeting.
So that is what he did.

The point that was / attempted raised in the article that someone traveled to Berlin had lunch and flew home for less money than taking the train home.
Shirely it should be more expensive to take the trip to Berlin than a train journey in the UK.
