Well, I've read the first eight books (the ninth comes out this fall), and I've watched seasons 1-4 of the show. I'm currently tapping my feet, waiting for season 5 to come out on Blu-Ray.

There are two curves here. One is developing the technology to reach and colonize those exoplanets. At this point most visible paths require emergent breakthroughs in propulsion, materials, environmental support, and so on. The second curve is our civilization's ability to survive long enough to let the first curve reach a point where it's possible.

If the curves intersect, we reach the stars. If they do not, we are fodder for some future archaeologist who is not human.
