Hi all, I have had an idea for a project to help my company collect the monthly info a little bit easier. I don't know if it is possible and if it is how difficult it would be to implement.

The idea is instead of e-mailing in there info which sometimes takes 4-5 days (alot of our places are without the net for periods of time) would it be possible to create a program that could recieve text messages?

Before I start researching properly into this idea I just wanted a rough idea of whether it is possible and how complex an idea it is?

Thanks

I Imagine that would require extra hardware between to act as the text receiving device, although I haven't any experience in this area it sounds plausible.

How would the user interact with the program? texting information doesn't sound any faster then email for example depending on the quantity of data you want to be sent attaching a document to an email is probably simpler then to a text message.

Are Text messages limited in size too?

I couldn't find anything on Google, the solutions I saw used a phone plugged into a computer to do it which ruins the point I imagine

Could the "home base" that gets all the messages be a phone connected to a computer with its message list stored on the computer?

I imagine that's the simplest way this would work?

sorry for the late reply.
Surely if you can receive text messages, you could use some 3G or GPRS connection for data?

you are right rob the problem is 3g and GPRS can sometimes be soooo sloww its painful! and a text would send as soon as enough signal is gained. Well in theory!
Use any SMS gateway service and u can get text message delivered easily, but if u r looking for free then u have to think.....

Go ahead ..... Good Luck
I would set up an app that cheeks for an Internet connection and if not found, collects the "info" in a local datafile (or database). If the Internet connection IS found, it transmits it's locally collected data to a web service.

That sounds like an idea, I had a similar idea but I though it would be nice if you could write the 4 numbers in a text in the correct order. Then comp pics it up enters them into db. Job Done. Alos with a text, like you suggest, if it is not sent instantly it wold be sent as soon as signal is gained
