Different Functionality for various profiles in web application

Hi,
I am new to web development. I'm trying to develop a new asp.net application. If would be great if anyone can suggest me sites or blogs for guidance & suggestions to develop an application which can create different functionality to different user accounts, and also what is the best practice in trying to distinguish between different user accounts.
Thanks In advance. Help would be greatly appreciated.
