AvalonDock and AvalonDockMVVM Sample Application Exception

Starting the (long?) migratory path from MSAccess/VBA to Net web apps, I want to learn about using MVVM with AvalonDock and WPF. Running both of the sample apps for AvalonDock 1.3 and AvalonDockMVVM ( Ashley Davis) under VS2010 with Net 4.0 result in the same error once I start manipulating the displayed initial layouts - a COM exception crossed a native/managed boundary (Exception from HRESULT: ox80040201).
Any advice/recommendations on the reason for this and a way forward would be much appreciated - John M P.
