It's not as simple as "Tell me how to do it" - there is a lot of practice, thinking, and learning to do.

The best thing you can do is to get a book on the appropriate language, or enrol in a course, and follow it through, doing all the exercises as you go. Almost any book will do, provided it doesn't have "For Dummies", "In xxx Days" or multiple exclamation marks in the title. WROX do some very good ones, as do Addison Wesley, but try looking at a few in a bookshop if you can to get an idea of which ones fit your way of thinking.

But nowadays, I probably wouldn't start with "C" - if you start with a more modern language, you will probably find it easier, particularly if you are a complete beginner.

I would suggest that C# is a better choice if you are starting from scratch, as it can lead you to both desktop and web development. Take a look at .NET Book Zero[^] by the great Charles Petzold, for a nice introduction.

+5 I was thinking about recommending something else than C/C++ in my answer but I was in a lazy state of mind. If the development area of interest lets using higher level stuff and productivity or lenght of learning curve is an important aspect than C# or java are much better choices. The Charles Petzold series are also highly recommended.

If you're just starting out, I would recommend a book from the head first series. They're pretty well written and fun to read.

Unless you need to learn something quick for a specific problem at hand, I'd start out with this book and get the fundamentals first before worrying too much about a specific language. Good luck :P

If you want to learn C/C++ then the best free start is here: http://www.cprogramming.com/[^]
That site is far enough to start programming in C and then C++. Then write a lot of programs and when you have specific qeustions come back to this forum with them.
