Why do PHP anyhow, are you being forced to ? What's wrong with ASP.NET ? MySQL is pretty crappy too, although it's free for non commercial use, MSDE is just plain free, and kicks it's ass. I recommend reviewing your architecture of choice, if you have a choice, and then buying some books and asking questions here. The code was difficult to maintain without ample training and due diligence. I heard MSDE is a much better database but then I have to go down the MS road again. ASP.NET is simply the only viable choice for web development. PHP was good in it's day, but that day is long gone. ASP was and is a hack. J2EE is just too complex and hard to use. ASP.NET is totally killer, and really easy to learn to use, not to mention that the web abounds with info. In all seriousness, I guarentee I could develop this site for you in C#/ASP.NET/MSDE much faster than anyone could do it in PHP using MySQL. I think you're making poor choices here, not least because your background in C++ actually empowers you to learn the best web development platform ( and it's totally free, unlike MySQL, which costs money in this case ( unless your real estate information system is theoretical or totally non-profit ). However...that statement clearly suggests to me...you have no idea what your talking about when it comes to web development... Anything you can do in ASP.NET I can do in PHP...not nateively maybe, but i'm sure there is a library or something written in PHP which allows you to do anything you can do in ASP.NET and in some cases better... PHP so I understand, is the most popular scripting language around...and for good reason...perhaps the source I got that from was being biased...but IMHO...PHP seems to power most web sites... PHP scripts are a dime a dozen....for anything you can think of...there are atleast a dozen scripts available ranging from "amatuer coder" to highly "skilled professional"... PHP I would argue is just as fast in execution if not faster than ASP.NET by virtue of the fact it's OSS and has so many eyes looking at it making optimization changes and the Zend engine likely being written in C for a Linux system. I'm not sure how the two compare byte for byte but in all honesty how can a Windows system execute as quick as a cut down *nix machine running only the required software??? PHP lacks in some RAD/Development areas...like it's OOP support is poor, but that's ok...PHP5 is alot better...besides PHP usually attracts more experienced Linux developers... There is a definite lack in quality IDE's...I still sometimes use VC++ 6.- IDE Other than that IDE fact...I would still very much so prefer to use PHP... BTW-Hosting is half the cost... As for MySQL? You can use other databases...quit easily...however there are some mega major web sites (so I understand) which are currently using MySQL...so it can't be that bad... You're talking about the speed of *nix vs Windows, this has nothing to do with PHP/ASP.NET. Mono will even this playing field, assuming such an advantage exists. REsponse times are fast enough that I care more about maintainable sites than fractions of a second. This is my point, this is the reason I'd suggest that someone with a C++ background especially learn ASP.NET instead of trying to learn PHP. I'm sure there are CP equivelants in PHP, but I've never seen them, because I don't use it, I use ASP.NET because I'd hate to have to write sites of the size that I work on without the support it gives me. Not because I can't, but because the better the tool, the easier it is to manage complexity. The change essentially allowed certain frames to be loaded with different aspx pages depending on user actions. Well, after trial and error I got the dynamic frames working. Now however controls seems to be in limbo. the two frames in questions that are loaded dynamically are shown correctly but they don't seem to be communicating. The technologies that I use in order to implement it are the following: • HTML • XHTML • CSS • PHP • JavaScript • XML • DHTML • DOM It is not necessary to use all the above but most of them. Main functionality should be that someone could Drag and Drop, Resize, etc the drawing elements. In addition to the main functionality of drawing the charts at the client side, a model(?)and a construct should be developed (with PHP) so that the user of the tool could be able to save the graph and call it back at a later moment for editing (I think this would be server side interaction). I would appreciate very much to know whether anyone could help me in order to carry out this project or give me hints , ideas and advise, in a step by step process, by having a close collaboration or even taking charge of the whole project and implement it on my behalf ? In any case, I would like to hear ,as soon as possible on any conditions and terms you consider to be necessary for any kind of collaboration in order to meet the demands of a successful project. How do I dynamically find the the top and left values (IN PIXELS) of an object with respect to the top left of the browser window. I use tables to format pages so objects can have parents, grandparents, great-grandparents,..etc. The clientLeft and offsetLeft in conjunction with the offsetWidth dont give me the values I need to set the proper location. I need a way to find the position with respect to the top left corner of the client area of the IE Explorer browser window. I have searched the msdn and am not finding the answer. Thanks a million. The "position" style can have a few different values. The 3 most used that you should be aware of are: inline absolute relative The default one is INLINE which allows the HTML elements to be rendered as they are found within the HTML code. In other words they follow the flow of the code in respect of their parent element. The ABSOLUTE positioning will ignore the hierarchy for of the element(in the HTML code) to wich is applied and position the element to exact coordinates having as origin the most top and most left of the browser wndow. This is why you will notice that all asolutely positioned elements also have a LEFT and a TOP style, style attributes that take as values numbers in pixels, picas, ems and percentages and a few others that my mind is missing now. So an element coded as such: <DIV style="position:absolute; top:100px; left:100px;">I AM ABSOLUTELY POSITIONED</DIV> will have its origin(top left corner of the DIV) to the coordinate 100,100 discarding any parent elements. No matter where it is found within the code, its position wouldn't change. The RELATIVE positioning is the same with the ABSOLUTE with one main difference.
