Why did this happen?

Because either we screwed up in a way that wasn't immediately obvious until now, or because the ASP engine running this site has just rolled over and died, or because the site is simply having a bad hair day.
Options

1. Try and do whatever you did again. Try again.
2. Open the CodeProject home page, and then look for links to the information you want. Sure, the information you need is probably on this page, but you never know your luck in a big city.
3. Pray, curse, or sacrifice burnt offerings, then see 1.

We need a what do you use for _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ forum. I think I've seen the "Which font do you use in your IDE?" question twice now in as many days. Any time now it will be "I'm an average developer looking for an average laptop that can run VS 2005 and SQL 2005 decently. What do you recommend?" Then it will be, "I'm sick of VSS what do you guys use to manage source code?" then after that it will be "Can you recommend a good drive imaging product for backups?" then after that it will be "Do you think dual core is better than dual quad core?" then it will be "I need to update Video Cards what do you recommend?" then it will be "C4n U gv m3 unl0ck c0d3s 4 v1sta?" then it will be "Chris your grid is cool how do I set focus?"

Just a uh... suggestion for creating somewhere to store these brilliant and often repeated suggestions. The java forum isn't being used for anything let's put them there. Laugh | :laugh:

Well firstly my response was too the post about OS's. Also there are some others but I have 90 pages of documentation to look over for tomorrow so my head keeps saying "Execute the core first then run the startup script but close the buggy process then..." (why didn't I just stick to business?) so I'll get back to you on the rest of them.

I updated my profile and changed my display name. But it is not reflecting in previously posted message ? Why don't you display that changed name in previous messages too ?

This problem will help spammers or abusers to post messaged in forums in different names

On the flipside having messages change their author name automatically means it's difficult to track members who post under one name then change their name and post under another. With the current system you can look back historically and see.

It's also a very hefty load on the servers

I guess most people these days won't be as bothered as I am, but the width of the Code Project layout really annoys me and I feel it's time I mentioned it! Smile | :)

I have a 17-inch CRT set to 1028x768 so I can actually read it with my relatively poor eyesight. I gather Code Project is designed to be displayed in a window about 1028 pixels wide. This is OK if I'm viewing the page full screen, but very irritating when I have it in a smaller window (for instance, to copy and paste to VS, or check more than one page at once).

In this case, I have to scroll to the right in order to get past the advert on the left and actually read the meaningful content and the menu items on the right. It's not difficult to do, and of course, it'll be fixed when I get that 20-inch TFT monitor I've always dreamed of, but as I have to do it every single time I visit the site right now, it would be nice to have at least the option of a narrower window layout...

I'm *this* close to putting a PayPal link up on the homepage to ask for donations to get you a decent screen. 17"? CRT? That's cruel and unusual.

However, I'm shocked and appalled that CodeProject.com isn't taking up your entire desktop and is, instead, being relegated as "just another window". Shocked, I tell you.

(Although I could always tweak the layout to be a little more friendly, too, I guess...)

And its vertical hold is on the blink so every now and then, I get a ripple effect as the picture shrinks and then resizes again! You're right, maybe I should start a collection so I can afford a new one. Smile | :)

We're just not as rich as we used to be before having children... that, and I'm waiting for the price of 20-inch TFTs to drop so I can make my husband's cheap 17-inch TFT look silly. Wink | ;)

In the meantime, the bit of IE CSS someone suggested solved the problem. Why didn't I think of that? D'Oh! | :doh:

(though I can imagine that from your point of view, it's not great as it circumvents some of your ads).

I use a 17" at home, granted mine does 1600x1200 but it's still a 17" CRT. I'm basically in the same position as Emma, the LCDs I want as replacements are more than I'm willing to spend unless my current display dies. I don't like the lousy real world viewing angles (the ones quoted in marketing specs are pure pravda) of the cheaper TN types. IPS displays do look as good as CRTs IMO but are significantly more expensive (see apple's line of LCD monitors and the displays used in the current iMacs for examples).

I have the same problem (1024x768 laptop screen). If you use Firefox, i can hook you up with a little GreaseMonkey script that'll move that ad-bar to the left side of the page (so you don't have to scroll past it).

Take Shog's suggestion. I had the same problem with the Google Desktop on the right and his little tweak tweaked it good. Smile | :)

Pfft, I did something about it, I have a ton of windows open at work and need to just see the forums. So I added my own CSS to IE and now only see the main portion of the forums. Smile | :)

It's probably only a problem for this one article, but when I reply to feedback on my RawInput article[^], clicking Post Message tries to redirect to its former location in UserItems[^]. Just thought I would point this out as an ickle tiny bug. Smile | :)

I log in, click on the article (http://www.codeproject.com/useritems/smartstartmenu.asp), click on 'modify', and I get 1 of 3 that allows me to add uploads. Does not seem to matter if I add any paths or not... I click next and my browser spins forever. Is this an on going issue or something I need to fix on my system here? Thanks! -Shaun
