Hi All,
May I know what are Real Time Operating Systems. Though I know the general overview of the concept, what I want to know is that what are the various constraints that the Real Time OS follows. Also I've read that real time systems do not have a secondary memory such as Disk, is it true?? If yes then does Real time systems only have a RAM or ROM ?? I've come across some people saying that real time systems may have a Disk as a secondary memory. This has lead me to confusion. Can anybody clear my doubts.

Real Time Operating Systems are usually subdivided in two classes: "hard" real time and "soft" real time. A "hard" RTOS must have absolutely predictable response time to any event, which usually prevents the use of disk memory. A "soft" RTOS will have response time following a known statistical model with some guaranteed upper boundary. Many commercial RT systems are actually hybrids that run a normal time-sharing OS as a "background task" of a soft RTOS.

As far as I consider RTOS, its just the platform whenr the system runs for LIVE. For example, the mobile phone has a processor in it, with its own OS running on it. And that OS I mean, may or maynot have the memory disk.
The actual 'code' will be in a EEPROM, programmed at the lab/factory. And it starts 'running' when power ON.
They are mostly driven by the interupts and timed routines (people call that as ISRs - interupt service routines).
Thats what I know... r u confused more??

I search for any ideas about to know the name
of the interactive user on any remote machine.
I try the API function WNet... , it lists all userlogons
on a machine (batch, service, interactive,...).
But I can't figure out who is the interactive logon-user.
Do you have any ideas ?

Up until about 10 days ago, I'd been using Windows 2000 Professional as my development system, and everything was just fine.
As my HD was dying rapidly I just bit the bullet, and got a new drive, new CPU, etc, including getting a copy of XP Professional.
I did NOT do an upgrade, but a brand new install, and had IIS selected for install as well.
Installed Visual Studio 7 Enterprise Developer Edition just fine as well. No errors, no warnings.
Ok, now come the fun part.. IIS is NOT rendering ANY of my ASP.NET components when I make an ASP.NET application. No buttons displayed, no Textforms, NOTHING, except labels.
I can take the exact same code and put it on my production W2K Server, and IIS there handles it all just fine. However I don't fancy using my production box for hosting development stage code.
Has ANYONE run into this irritating problem? And if so, has anyone a solution. I am rather close to doing a fresh install of Windows 2000 Professional, but then I would have thrown away the $200 I paid for XP Professional, and that irks me.

It is not just WXP, I use WXP and ASP.NET works just fine.
What does happen though (and it happens on W2K as well) is that the file associations in IIS for ASP.NET disapear. I have not found the cause, but it has happened to me once before.
To check go into IIS and then: Right Click the Default Web, select Properties. Then click the Home Directory tab and click the Configuration button. Now in the list displayed in front of you look for the ASPX file. If it is not there or the Executable Path does not point to aspnet_isapi.dll then you need to run the following command which re-associates ASP.NET files in IIS.
C:\WINNT\Microsoft.NET\Framework\v1.0.3705\aspnet_regiis.exe -i
Obviously replace WINNT with whatever your Windows path is.

hi,
my os is windows 95.
when it starts it says "cannot find system.ini"

Besides saying that you are screwed (probably are in the long run) you can try this...
1 - Boot to dos
2 - Search for any files that have a 'system" in thier name. You ar elooking fo ranything that coul dbe a backup copy (due to a recent install of something or file edit using a good utility - like systedit - from a recent date). Pay attention to file extensions like '.bak' '.syd - file was backed up by sysedit'.
3 - Copy this file back to system.ini (IE: copy system.syd system.ini)
4 - Try to restart into windows.
This MIGHT work, but I highly recoment that you determine why you lost the file in the first place. This sounds either like someone was messing with you, or you, or you did something carless, or you had a virus. I had seen a virus in the past that places a 'del c:\windows\*.ini' in the autoexec.bat file so each time you boot up your ini files get deleted.

Please excuse my jumping in, but what type of OS would you advise? I've been trying to "replace" MS OS's for over 3+ years... and I'm still desperately seeking a system that does not have to be rebuilt simply to boot or properly shut down! My story is too long but I'm with you... IE: W95, 98, 98SE, ME and now XP! Even my ancient Mac 512SE has more up time than any of the previous... I keep it around just to retype and send snail mail when my other (7) MS boxes fail... at least I know it will still power up, print and power down without having to do some type of system file maintenance... I have 8 boxes (none networked) and on any given day, I can't guarantee a flawless session of composing and printing a document for my kid's school assignments... the answer to "where do you want to go today" usually means "crazy" for me...
Anyone care to hear the whole story? I'm new to CP, and looking for serious low level help... Is there a forum for articles like "digital dancing with the devil"? I've dedicated myself to learning C, C++, pearl, Pascal, basic, and/or even (God forbid) assembly, simply to understand and fix the basic errors with (IBM compatible) power on, os boot, application Open, Save, Print and Close... and most importantly "safe" shutdown and power off! I shouldn't have to be a rocket scientist... For God sakes, I'm a DRAM fab engineer whose only real goal in life was to publish a music and video magazine (in color, one flaw of the 512 Mac SE)! 15 years later I’m still trying, and now I'd like to do it over the web... I never thought it would require the study and practical use of a bookshelf full of programming manuals…
Maybe this should have been an article, and maybe this is not the right place to look for collaboration and help on my “PC” issues and website building desires… If not I apologize for my comments (and adding my $.02 worth) in agreement about MS… But I also want to thank CP for making problem code information and advise from professionals like you to the rest of us general public type persons… Nuff said… again, what OS do you suggest?

What is the actual message you're seeing? IRQ9 is commonly shared by PCI devices by design, and it's also shared with IRQ2 to cascade two eight-input IRQ controler circuits. It looks like all but the modem are integrated parts of the motherboard, so they are presumably tested and known to work properly even though they share an interrupt line. If you're reasonably certain that this otherwise normal-looking situation is causing a problem, try moving the modem to another slot. That can make a difference in which resources are assigned to the device.

I indirectly fixed (not a solution for the problem) the problem. I dissabled the Norton Internet security that was installed with my server. Now , the PC doesnt hang. Just for the heck of it, I enabled the norton stuff... the PC hanged promptly in 10 minutes.....
The actual error message was.... DRIVER_IRQ_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL....

That is not a problem at all, PCI devices can share IRQs.

Do you mean a BSOD with an IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL error? That has nothing to do with hardware IRQs, it's usually a buggy driver. The first thing to try is updating the drivers for your hardware.

U r right about the error message. I didnt upgrade my driver... but did something else to fix the problem.
I disabled my NOrton Internet Security Edition... oops... the PC doesnt hang. I confirmed this by enabling the Norton Internet Security and... PC hanged.....
Thanks for ur advice?? Is norton handling the IRQ for anyreason.... and why is it hanging my PC????

Yes: do not replace it. It's a system file and Windows 2k System File Protection won't let you do it.

It needs to be replaced becasue it is corrupted and is causing problems and windows file protection errors keep comin up. Even W2K is having trouble replacing it. Would directx or SP3 replace this file?

Try SP3, or re-installing your current service pack.
If that doesn't work, try running "SFC /scannow".
If that still doesn't work, the version in the dllcache (C:\WinNT\System32\dllcache\) is corrupt. You should be able to replace that version with the correct file, and then run "SFC /scannow" to replace the version in the system directory. Only use this as a last resort - you can really bugger your machine up by doing this!

You need at least a Win2k server to create a domain, otherwise just put the computers in the same workgroup.
