We often see comments that are related to some Tip/Trick where OP is trying to reach author by posting an alternate to Tip.
For such alternates, we should have a new category like 'Not an Alternate', 'Comment to Tip', or something else that suits it.
Sample question found today:Reported as Unclear for now[^].

Several times I have posted a response in the wrong place because of the reply/comment dichotomy. Maybe someone can make it idiot-proof (or Hans-proof ).

If you report it, someone will see it and take care of it. You don't have to be 100% thorough in your reporting. We'll usually work it out.

You can still ask that question at the bottom of the tip. In fact if you asked us (CodeProject) directly we would look at you blankly, shrug, and move it. If you ask the author he can edit and move it himself.

I noticed in the newsletter that the "Third Party" page was linked to. I'm a little foggy on what consists of a third party product and what I can post. I see that there is mention that I can't post simple how-to guides. I'm thinking of writing some articles related to a free and open source CMS called Umbraco. Some questions:
- Do free and open source products count as third party products, or is this section of the site intended to weed out people wanting to sell their products? As an example of where this might be foggy, the makers of Umbraco sell a subscription to Umbraco TV, which are basically a bunch of video tutorials. So, their product is free, but they do offer services related to it which cost money.
- I think it would be useful to create a how-to guide on how to install Umbraco, perhaps on various platforms and with mention of various pitfalls to watch out for. Would this be allowed?
This third-party page could probably use some clarification (more general versions of answers to the above questions would be a good start).

I think 'anything' for which you do not control source code and is not on CP website comes under 3rd party.

a) you can't write an article about your own product
b) the article has to be about software development, not about a service you sell to developers. It needs to show innovation around an existing product or tool, or show fixes for known issues.

This is the murkiest. Generally I'd say "no" since I would assume this info is on Umbarco's site. However, if Umbarco are completely hopeless and leaving their users lost at sea, and there's a demand for this info, then the answer is yes.
The third party page already has:
This section is for articles on third party products. This section is for the members only and must not be used to promote or advertise products in any way, shape or form.
The rules for posting articles here are simple:
- You must provide significant innovation and cannot simply be a how-to guide that would appear on the vendor's own help pages, or you must solve a significant problem common to users of the product or library.
- You must not post advertisements for the product, implicit or explicit. We are the final judges on this. There will be no mention of price, offers or coupons, upgrades, trials or anything that would induce or tempt a person to visit the third party site and download the product. This article is purely for those who already use the product.
- We reserve the right to replace any links to the product with search-engine unfriendly links. Articles must not be used to promote a product in any form, including SEO.
- Articles must be tagged "third-party"
- Articles must not be written by anyone associated with the company that writes the product. Self promotion is not allowed
