Hello,
I'm stucked with my program's memory leaks... (I can't find, after searching intensively for them, why/where there is still one leak (well, one at least))...
I was wondering which one of the tools that are intended to find out those leaks should I use.
Thank you in advance for your advice...

BoundsChecker - pretty good for catching most of the errors, but have problem with COM servers in instrumented builds (generates memory exceptions).
Rational Purify - very good, but might significantly slow down the program.

Hello,
first of all let me thank you for your answer...
QUESTION1:
AlexO wrote:

It will only slow down my program when my program will be compiled/linked and the Rational Purify program will be running, isn't it?
NOTE:
I've not seen that program, I've just installed the demo version of the BoundsChecker program and I've been able to see that I can start/stop the BoundsCehecker working... then my question is: can I enable/disbale the rational purify work?
Thank you in advance...
QUESTION2:
From your point of view Rational Purify would be a better tool than BoundsChecker?
Thank you in advance.

The best tool I know of is Purify - though I haven't tried the latest (at USD $750).

$750!
I will have to work hard to convince the company manager...
Could you explain (summarizing) why do you believe that Purify is the best one?
Thank you in advance.

Hi,
I need to have a database replicated in several laptops, where they are going to work without connection... What they want to do is to synchronize the database each X days ( glups )
I thought that... ok... this thing is always bad, but at least I could use GUIDS for the primary keys of each record in order to avoid collisions, it's that a good idea ? How this affect to the performance of the database ?
Thanks in advance, greetings
Braulio

I always use a UUID for my primary keys, either generated by the SQL @Identity value; Or on Oracle/ Access I use UuidToString to generate me a UUID.
I've never seen it affect the performance of the database.

Sorry,
One more question, does not have Ms Access a built in type that can hold GUID or UUID ? SQL Server yes isn't ?
thanks

It tend to use a text/varchar based field. I've found that is makes it easier for compatability across databases. I can't remember off the top of my head the length but it was something near 40.

It is a sample for making an Custom Internet Explorer toolbar.
In this sample i am trying to create a modeless dialog on the click of a button.
i tried using many a things but was always helpless.
A thing that i found in that problem was
1) a dialog template couldnt be loaded from the resources.
2) AfxGetResourceHandle() always results in a debug assertion failure.
3) AfxGetApp() always returns 0.
i donnno what to do as i am trapped.
plz someone help me out.
Thanx

I design a class inherit CControlBar, but when I resizing it, it's size is modified continuous. I hope that it will not set size and repaint until the mouse is released.

It depends on Windows settings. In Windows 2000: Display Properties - Effects - Show window contents while dragging.

Ok, I want to capture the mouse's release message, when it finished dragging. In fact, I can capture the WM_NCLBUTTONDOWN, but I can't get the WM_NCLBUTTONUP, why?Thanks a lots.

Hi all,
Is there a program out there somewhere that is designed specifically for user interface development? I mean something like the dialog editor in visual studio, but as a standalone program. I've seen that it is (sort of) possible with Visio, but I'm looking for something more sophisticated. For example, it would be nice if there would be support for custom controls, with a build-in bitmap editor or so. It would also be nice if it could export to .rc format. Thanks!

I'm trying to figure out a way to set the cursor's position. I can't seem to find any information about it. It appears to be possible because 3D Studio is capable of doing it*, but how?
* In 3D Studio, when you rotate an object, the cursor can actually go off the screen and appear on the other side, so the user is never limited in how far an object is rotated.

Thanks! I discovered that I couldn't find the function because I'm using VS .NET and I had my filter set to "Visual C++". (Apparently, MS made a mistake by filtering this function when the filter is set to "Visual C++".) I discovered that if I chose "no filter" the function appeared in the help system.

dear all
i have written a small app which detects windows shutdows or user logoff using WM_QUERYENDSESSION and runs an application say calculator using CreateProcess(..)
the problem is that i'm getting this error =>
"application cannot initialize because windows station is shutting down"
how do i ensure that the calculator runs whenever a user logs off or shuts down the computer.
the code is=>
case WM_QUERYENDSESSION:
{
Run(); //CreateProcess(...) code
if (lParam & ENDSESSION_LOGOFF)
{
MessageBox(hwnd,"User Logging Off..........", "User LogOff Detected", MB_OK|MB_ICONINFORMATION);
}
else
{
MessageBox(hwnd,"System Shutting Down..........", "System ShutDown Detected", MB_OK|MB_ICONINFORMATION);
}
return 1;
}
am i missing something crucial.
thanx
with Regards

Not at all. You can not start any applications during the shutdown/logoff process. It's as simple as that.
If you want to simulate this, return 0 to cancel the shutdown (keeping track of what type of shutdown it is), run the application (set a timer or something...), and then initiate the shutdown from software when the application has finished (use ExitWindowsEx() - read the documentation).

thanx a ton 4 ur early reply
but is there any other way to do such a task.
bcoz if i can just know whether it is a logoff event or a system shutdown.
i can't know about a system restart
any clues!!!!!!!!!

I'm not sure about a system restart. The docs state that the lParam value is a bitmask, and they only mention the ENDSESSION_LOGOFF value, but there may be another bit defined in the system is restarting. You could just run a few tests, by storing the value of this parameter as you try some shutdowns and restarts. Remember that if you return 0, the shutdown or restart won't actually take place, so you won't have to wait for it each time. Other than that, I'm not sure about detecting a restart. Sorry...
