It would be perfectly fine to ditch older browsers if widespread use of them had also gone away. As of last month[^]; only ~1/3rd of IE users were on v 10 or 11; and 8 was still the most widely used version. In China, IE6[^] still has 22% of the market due to the widespread use of WarezdozeXP with all update services disabled.

As an aside, while I fully support MS's decision to dog food it's new accelerated 2d APIs; by making IE9+ Vista or newer only they've made IE8 linger as a major browser for far longer than it should have. Dead | X| Cry | :((
Did you ever see history portrayed as an old man with a wise brow and pulseless heart, waging all things in the balance of reason?
Is not rather the genius of history like an eternal, imploring maiden, full of fire, with a burning heart and flaming soul, humanly warm and humanly beautiful?
--Zachris Topelius

Training a telescope on one’s own belly button will only reveal lint. You like that? You go right on staring at it. I prefer looking at galaxies.
