For a lot of parents school is a day care, where they drop off there kids 5 days a week and they don't have to deal with them.
If you don't take an interest how can you expect them to?

I started 1st grade at age 4, went from 4th to 6th grade skipping 5th grade, and finished 17 years of education by the time I was 20.
I thought I was pretty good till I ran into a 14-year-old sophomore in college -- not high school -- who I think earned his PhD by the time he was 20. I was envious that I was straight-jacketed into a rigid education system that wouldn't met me skip more grades.

None of the "education" from primary school through high school is worth a damn anyway. It could be condensed to a single year that you could take when you're, I don't know, 10 or so, and even then it wouldn't be a very intensive year.
They do an excellent job at draining the will to live out of you though. That's probably the most important thing they do.

I think I read recently that early education became legally enforced in the UK in the late 1800s to free up women to go back to work, not for any evidence-based reasons to do with education.

Far too much focus in education on being able to measure it rather than actually producing happy kids who can properly interact with each other and the world they live in.
An education system based on league tables, budgets, and uniform measures of quantifiable success is a flawed one.

Where does one pick up the book that insures that say 90% of the students that participate in the course of study promoted in the book will end up that way?

It's important for kids to have family structure in their early years particularly. Sending them off to school as soon as possible is not in their best interest.

Or why start formal education at all? Kids (everyone really) will learn better when they are interested in what they are learning. This school takes it to the extreme, and I like the concept enough that I've considered moving to an area that has a school with the same philosophy for when my kids start school. Until then it's playtime at home and play based preschools.

I've seemingly bricked my wife's 6 month old all in one HP Envy after attempting the update to Win 8.1. The update failed on restart, and the system said it needed to restore back to Win 8...which it did, and restarted and everything seemed fine. Two days later when she really needs to use it, it has turned itself off, and refuses to boot...the little dots start spinning and either just stop, or just go away, and nothing happens. Twice it has displayed a message about running a restore, but both times, it just becomes totally unresponsive.
I don't have installation media for the computer, but do have my own Win8 that I will probably try booting from to do a repair.
One of these days, I am going to stick to the plan about not working on other people's computers...including family.

There must be a way to launch the restore partition. Go into the bios and see.
The difficult we do right away...

Can you get to the advanced tool menu on boot ?

Can't get that far...I was able to boot to my CD (win8 pro) and got to the advanced tools section.
Automatic Repair - failed
Restore to a known restore point = failed
Now it is checking for disk errors.
I will try another restore point. If that fails, I will try to boot it to Ubuntu and save what I can, then restore to factory. Grrr!!!!

I guess it is possible that it had a harddrive problem.

Thanks for the suggestions...I was able to get it restored finally, however when it went to boot, it gave me a  'sad windows' screen (never seen that before) and provided a really great, informative error message: 'MACHINE CHECK EXCEPTION'
On to plan F. How appropriate.
Plan F = Backup anything important and restore to factory state...failed!!! I still get the error message same as above...maybe it is a hardware issue after all. Now the fun part...talking to HP about honoring the warranty.

yeah they figured that most users didn't understand them anyway so they just put up the sad face now.
I found a link where some one had that error and chased it down to a unsupported wifi card.
I don't think they still give the error code do they?
I've only seen it once myself and can't remember.
Was any different hardware added or upgraded from the original before the os upgrade ?

I had that sickening feeling in my gut when my upgrade failed. Luckly the automatic restore worked fine. It turned out to be an issue with having my scanner plugged in. This is due to an issue with its driver (I think it is Vista vintage). The MS help site I found suggests only having having a keyboard and mouse plugged in during the upgrade. The strange thing is that I installed the driver after the upgrade and all is fine.

...an Arduino Starter kit!
Yes, a small present, but something to keep me entertained over the Christmas break.
Just spent the evening messing about with a few basics. I'm going to follow as much of the initial projects as I think I need to, and then I'm going to try and build myself either:
(a) a car that avoids walls/obstacles
(b) a car controlled by my mobile phone
Depending on how quickly I can pick it all up, I can either build myself an integrated H-Bridge, or, I can just buy an Arduino H-Bridge Shield which might save me some time, and leave the H-Bridge project for another time.
Currently downloading Atmel Studio as the Arduino IDE, although quite well thought out and nicely polished, is a bit basic as I'm used to a more Visual Studio type IDE with debugging, intelli-sense etc - which is especially useful if you've got to learn some new language (well, not a new language per se, but for functions etc it is useful).
Aahhh looking forward to it - feeling happy - only thing is now that I just need the wife to let me have some spare time...

A good site if you get stuck and need help is avrfreaks[^].

BTW the I'm working on a 4WD car now get the rest of the parts tomorrow and car start breaking out the saws and soldering iron. If I don't come out in a week call for help.

Like I say, I'm just starting out, so have got quite a bit of messing around, playing with things to build up my knowledge before the basics become second nature and I can move onto more complicated stuff.
