That made no sense then, and it still makes no sense now -- but then it was in a comic, where precious little makes sense.
That's also why there's a difference of an hour between flying to and from China (The "experts" are completely wrong on this).
When you're flying against the rotation of the Earth, you actually move slower, because the atmosphere is pushing the other way; when you go with the rotation of the Earth, you go faster, because the "wind" (which is not a wind) is behind you.

So I applied for a job working on the Java stack, yea I know, and they came back with a question about how much C++ I've done. Well I used it some 5-10 years ago but not much and never to any great depth. Great, can you fill in this C++ test then...

The Reason for Fear
When the computers decide that the picture you are looking at is a Pembroke because it's tail is shorter, then you don't question it. The computer knows after all. But, what if the corgi's tail was bobbed and it is actually the other type? Well, you just don't question that in the future, because people don't think.
The Phones are the Smart Ones
iPhones are smart and people are dumb (in the future and now).
Now, how about when it is something much more important, like detecting cancer or the face of a criminal.
"Well, we have to put this guy in prison, because the computer told us too."
That's what Gates and Musk fear and they are probably smart.
Gates & Musk know that people don't often think. Instead they just react to their AI.

And the problem is that people want to see 'intelligence' where it doesn't exist. It is NOT original thought, it is a formulaic response. I remember being at odds with a visiting lecturer while in college to this same affect.

A very good point.
I agree. True intelligence is human. Any algorithm which seems to exhibit intelligence is in fact following some prescripted code, whereas we don't know the source code for humans.
Humans are infinitely creative -- and by that I mean often stupid. But, stupidity can be a form of intelligence. A computer programmed to be intelligent is limited to never having the ability to be stupid and thus humans can create art and beauty and stupidity where a computer never can.
I know my comments are going to bring a lot of response. Humans are better than computers and always will be. Except they are so infinitely stupid.

Um, you don't write any algorithms.
You can just use a standard genetic algorithm or backprop routine, and feed it the names and types of dog that exist, and loads of pictures with dogs in them.
Then you hire a couple of students to click "Y" if the routine guesses the right dog, and "N" if it doesn't.
It shouldn't take long before it can pick out any dog in almost any background.
